External communications are only part of the job. How do community managers work inside their companies? A Twitter chat today on the hashtag #cmgrchat revealed how pros strengthen their most important communities - their companies. </h2><p>Storified by Jeff Elder · Wed, Jul 18 2012 16:14:29</p><div>Today's #cmgrchat will be at 2pm ET on "Building Community Internally". We'll take a look inside the companies you're working for! #cmgrBrett Petersel</div><div>Ooh, building community internally! One of my favorite topics. Will try to dive into a little of this #cmgrchatEvan Hamilton</div><div><h2>How do you rally the troops?</h2></div><div>Q1) How much are you as community manager involved in building community within your own organization? #cmgrchat #cmgrTheCommunityManager</div><div>@newsle I go out to coffee with colleagues, hang out on the couches in the office, play with the remote controlled shark toy #cmgrchatJeanette LeFevre</div><div>Gadgetsin</div><div>@TheMiddle @Grovo Not the #inflatableshark! https://plus.google.com/photos/100279481157780610176/albums/5715326208196625601 #cmgrchatMatt Hirschfelt</div><div>A1 I try to build community internally as it supports our efforts externally. #CmgrchatLouise DiCarlo</div><div>This is Mac http://ow.ly/ckG6T Office dog, therapist, mascot, and more at @Livefyre #cmgrchatMeghan Krane</div><div>Mac #livefyre #instadogMeghan Krane</div><div>I'll also give a plug to our wonderful office dog Mac, he brings everyone together at @Livefyre  #cmgrchatMeghan Krane</div><div>A1) Good amount. We have weekly "current trends" discussions w/ agency. Although, booze trolley is what really brings us together! #cmgrchatArielle Calderon</div><div>A1: Regardless of official responsibilities, all CMs should try to shape comm internally since that's our strong suit digitally #cmgrchatGrovo</div><div>@JPedde A1 We are building a social intranet to connect, collaborate and build community  #cmgrchatMark Greenfield</div><div>@corecorina Lunch is a great time to get everyone together, talk shop, evaluate trends, and put heads together to solve problems #CMgrChatDon</div><div>@KellyLux Offline community building within office hours is key; don't cut in to people's personal lives. #cmgrchatcorecorina</div><div><h2>What goals and tools are important to you?</h2></div><div>Q2) What are some of the goals you have for collaborative efforts in the company? What types of tools or tactics are you using? #cmgrchatTheCommunityManager</div><div>Storify has actually been a great collaboration tool for us. #cmgrchatJason Gerdon</div><div>Nice. </div><div>A2 Does yelling down the hallway count as a tool for collaborating?  #cmgrchatMatt Hirschfelt</div><div>@MattHirschfelt It only counts if you use a megaphone. Go loud or go home. #cmgrchatJosh Isom</div><div>#analog :) RT @MattHirschfelt: A2 Does yelling down the hallway count as a tool for collaborating?  #cmgrchatMeghan Krane</div><div>We mostly use Google Talk RT @chelsead: @LovelyLu Are you using hangouts in G+? or Google Talk? #cmgrchatLouise DiCarlo</div><div><h2>What about other departments?</h2></div><div>Q3) How many departments do you as the #cmgr touch? What are some tips for fostering a great working relationship? #cmgrchatTheCommunityManager</div><div>I touch every single department as a #cmgr. Because every department touches customers. #cmgrchatEvan Hamilton</div><div>Thankfully we don't have an HR department. ;) RT @corecorina: So much touching. :)  #cmgrchatEvan Hamilton</div><div>A3) Draw connections; show why what you're working affects what they are working on. Speak their language; teach them yours. #cmgrchatAmanda P Dolan</div><div>A3) A cmgr should be part of every department, because you represent the user. And you're building a product for the user. #cmgrchatPaulette Bleam</div><div>a3) i connect and work with every department. part of what I love about the role.  #cmgrchatHillary Boucher</div><div>A3: Simply put, BE APPROACHABLE! "Hellos" and "goodbyes" are small, but can have great effects on those you don't work w/ 24/7. #cmgrchatGrovo</div><div><h2>Can we all just get along internally?</h2></div><div>Q4.  What are some of the challenges you face internally, and how do you plan to overcome them?  #cmgrchat #cmgrTheCommunityManager</div><div>Q4 my coworkers are always looking for an ROI. I'm trying to show them socmed can't always be measured that way, it's brand bldng #cmgrchatGrace Ortelere</div><div>A4: Personality clash can sour any atmosphere - important to bridge divide at all costs. Use humor or #officedog! :) #cmgrchatGrovo</div><div>A4: Dividing duties among other staff to readily "attack" management with angles sometimes helps let them see. #cmgrchat@Jennifer Stavros</div><div>Also create opportunities to reinforce values: field trips to visit customers, making all employees answer 1 support email/wk #cmgrchatEvan Hamilton</div><div>A4) Almost everyone in the office speaks directly with our fans. The only challenge is overseeing those lines of communication. #cmgrchatJosh Isom</div><div><h2>Got another topic?</h2></div><div>If anyone has a topic you'd like us to explore on #CMGRchat, please tweet me or @jpedde.  We love getting your input! #cmgrchatKelly Lux</div>
