As the media industry continue to figure out its business model for the future, there is increasing room for outlets like Cisco's "The Network" to tell stories that we care about. As I recently asked a journalism school dean: "Is ad-supported journalism the only way?" Clearly, Cisco produces great routerandswitch-supported journalism from great journalists. There are many ways to support journalism and some might make others uncomfortable because it is different, but change is good. Come check us out at http://thenetwork.cisco.com
Thanks John. Very impressed with what you folks are doing. You're right: The business model has forced innovation. We now need more content than ever, but the old reservoir of it is running dry. Thanks for bringing in some fresh water.
Great stuff, Jeff. I deal with this every day and couldn't agree with you more. Awesome story about the man in black. I assume you got him the most bad-ass book on trains to have ever existed.
Dave, thanks for the note. You folks in Milwaukee are trying new stuff, and have been going back to the Journal-Sentinel exploring social in the mid-2000s, I believe. I was actually so starstruck by Johnny Cash that I couldn't look him in the eye!
I manage the social media for Drs. Thomas, House, & Associates. We utilize Pinterest, Polyvore, and Facebook to help spread not only the message that eyewear is sexy and cool but also important health of the eyes information. I think you've touched on something important- when your customers can see the passion you have for your product or service, you've created a unique positioning statement.
Come by and check out our facebook, but remember I'm an Optician, not a social media expert. :)
You're reiterating something that's very much been on my mind lately. There are far too many aggregators and not enough creators. It's the latter who will really distinguish themselves in the vast of ocean of content that is the Internet.
If I had a dollar for every company that shot down content driven media I'd be rich by now! In our line of work (PR-social media- management), it's thee best way to connect with customers and readers.
I am now forwarding this article to each and evey client ;). Thank you!!!
Thanks very much, Adria. I have to agree. Creating unique original content puts companies in the driver's seat. Kudos to Cisco for setting up shop like this.
Jeff, great story.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Daniel. Yes, the aggregation and sharing of content is outpacing original thought and expression. You make an excellent point.
